Ill be back with the senseless rants in two days, but today is about exploration and expeditions. What about them you might ask, if you hadn’t noticed the title, well how the days of exploring are gone. As a little kid I use to want to be an astronaut more than anything, even more than I wanted to be a Jedi or Indiana Jones. Really George Lucas Captured influenced my childhood dream jobs. OK, maybe Jedi trumped astronaut and explorer, but not by much! More often that not it feels as if my generation has missed the days of exploration on both sides, too soon and too late.
I want to be there! Seriously how cool would that be…. just imagine the tweet you could send, or the Facebook check in!
The history of mankind is punctuated with discoveries and explorers. Columbus, Marco Polo, Magellan, Armstrong and Shackleton were the first to step foot on the edges of the world in their day. Most risked their lives to test the limits and expand the horizons. But Cernan was the last, and is one of only a handful of men who have step foot on the moon. Since Apollo 17 we have grown increasingly stagnate, and complacent. How is this possible, how is this acceptable! We went to the bloody moon, how is Mars not next, or the ocean floor if we are to afraid to spend the money on space. Maybe the pursuit of money has overtaken the need to explore, or maybe its just a joint effort of the secret order of Illuminati to control humanity (yes people actually believe this!).
Now I love Netflix and HBO as much as the next guy, but I would rather be Walking across the ice at McMurdo station than watching it. The closest thing to exploration that I have seen since I was born was the ISS, which is a stepping stone to space that is being ignored. And that Storage Wars show. Is it possible that going through other peoples crap is more interesting to us than exploring Mars, or even returning to the moon. I gladly looked for a job in Antarctica for the feeling of being part of an expedition. With all of the technology we have now, I am sure that we could manage to send Netflix and even that Storage Wars out to those on their way to parts unknown
