Ok, so I am not old, but I am a bit of a science geek, also know as a boffin. This may leave me a bit out of the so called “loop” when it comes to what is cool and what is popular now a days. So if at all possible, could so one clear up a few things for me… please! I mean, I get the whole hipster craze. Well I don’t understand why, but I do get what it is. But there are some things that I hear or see that just confuse the hell out of me. Someone please help me on a few of these things.
Let’s start with the term “meta.” WTF is that all about. As far as I can tell meta seems to refer to inception like events. Like a geek playing a geek on TV, or a hipster being a hipster before it was ironically cool. All though I think that the hipster analogy is actually the long sought after patient zero for the current hipster epidemic. But seriously what does meta actually mean? For me every time I hear that something is meta, my brain goes into chemistry mode. For those of you that don’t have a working knowledge of organic chemistry… I know you wish you did… meta in chemistry means a substituent that has one carbon between it and another substituent on an aromatic ring. Like leaving a seat empty between two people at a table. So when I hear that something is meta I automatically think that it is intentionally distancing itself from what ever they are talking about. Now, I know that isn’t right, so please enlighten me!
Being ironically cool/uncool, or the hipster craze. I kinda understand dressing “ironically,” but what I don’t get is the idea that dressing as a geek, or someone from the 1980’s makes you uncool. Now adays that has become the new cool thing, therefore being a hipster is no longer being ironically uncool, or being different, it is just being like everyone else. I am not saying everyone is dressing like a hipster, I certainly don’t. But with more and more people dressing like hipsters, and ascting like them, then is only one logical next step. That would be the eventual, and already occurring, evolution of the super hipster. Hipsteritus purus as the science community will call them, will continue to try and ironically uncool themselves until they revert back to the 1850.
Lastly I could use a bit of help on whole twitter thing. I have had a twitter account for a few months now, and follow a lot of my favorite actor and writers and comedians. However I have only managed to gather a meager 12 followers in return, which is a bit depressing for someone who would like to be a content creator. So does anyone know how to get the internet to notice? I know that the actors, comedians and famous people i follow won’t be following me, but how can I get a following out there, and here for that matter.
